Guest Post: simbathe2nd - "Lessons from Entertainment"
From: simbathe2nd
Have you ever learned something really valuable from entertainment? Every once in a while I get surprised by a very good message or lesson that is taught to me by a tv show, movie, song, etc. It's really a great feeling to know you can learn from entertainment and enjoy it at the same time. Here's a few examples of lessons I've learned from media.Lesson 1. "If you fight fire with fire, you get a bigger fire" This was interesting because the usual end of that statement would be "You get burned" but I like this one better. This one says instead of you just getting burned, you cause a bigger fire that could harm more than just yourself. A great life lesson learned from, of all places, Hannah Montanna. Hey, I have a younger sister!
Lesson 2. "The only way to fight discrimination, is to prove the discriminator wrong" So many episodes of tv shows and even some movies that deal with racism, just try to beat everyone over the head with "stop being racist!" which I agree with, but a better method of fighting something is to change the one thing you have control over, yourself. This lesson was learned from Friday Night Lights the tv show in which they dealt with racism in one of the best race episodes I've ever seen bar none.
Lesson 3. Generally how to deal with a disability and being able to see through the eyes of someone with it. I watched a movie called Front Of The Class on a friend's recommendation and my eyes were really opened to how ignorant I was of people with mental disabilities like tourettes. To think of the courage it takes those people to even get up in the morning and face a world that constantly gives them funny looks is just astounding, let alone fighting for their dreams. It scares me how ignorant I am sometimes.
Lesson 4. "Don't Touch the Butt" Finding Nemo. LOL that one's just a joke.
Do you have any funny, interesting, or otherwise share worthy lessons you've learned from entertainment?
