Growing up I remember visiting my Grandfather every summer. It was fun, swimming in the pool - going to Disneyland or Six Flags...it was a blast.
Also hearing what he did to contribute to the Space race, designing rocket engines - all the way from the early days through the Space Shuttle.
You see, he helped in the production of the three main engines on the Shuttle itself (along with the Saturn V rocket engines...amongst others. I'm a proud Grandson and have always looked up to my Grandfather over the years.
Seeing this last Shuttle Mission I'm reminded of all those who worked on the space program over it's history - the success and the failures....but we've learned much in the process.
Every shuttle launch I'm reminded of my Grandfather, who is still a phone call away, and appreciate his work and efforts to push science to its limits - and allowing humankind to leave this rock we call Planet Earth.
To those who were ever a part - or are a part of NASA and the companies that support that agency - thank you. Let's hope this last shuttle mission goes well, and is a positive testimony of what we can do as a society when given the latitude and flexibility to do what needs to be done.
I feel a little sad about that last shuttle going up. My cousin's career is also at NASA, working with the shuttle components, like the tiles, so I'm not sure what he'll do now.
