  • Day 21 - The Campaign Continues

Today we mark as day 21 of the 45 day campaign (although I might be a day or two off).    That being said, we're over 47% towards our goal and in the middle of the fundraising campaign.

@SaintVI has shared a great parable - well written and insightful  - http://saintvi.xanga.com/774010621/the-parable-of-the-duh/

For those curious about various fundraising activities - check out:

(there's another giveaway listed at the end of this post also)

I've also been catching up on @roadlesstaken 's online radio show.   Fun memories and great insight from our fellow Xangans!

I've shared my thoughts on ad-revenue based websites.   Xanga has been using google adsense as the primary source of revenue to pay the bills, and over the years have provided other advertising alternatives to keep options open for advertisers - and for Xanga to be kept free for all.   Premium users are more stable in providing a revenue option.

There are many flaws in an ad revenue model - I explore some here:  http://edlives.xanga.com/773915246/the-rise-and-fall-of-ad-revenue-based-websites/

There were also many websites based on this model that aren't around anymore, I discuss a little about that here:  http://edlives.xanga.com/773824064/lets-look-at-free-blogging-platforms/

Some have mentioned not seeing the 'value' of what Xanga is offering with Xanga 2.0...    so let's explore what we know Xanga 2.0 can offer with the new business model:

1 - by being wordpress based, and open source, Xanga 2.0 will be able to offer it's users a better experience in terms of turn time on requests for plug ins.    With it's current proprietary platform, we're still waiting on our ideas to be launched.

Cost value?    Wordpress premium starts at $30 per year.   Powerful plugins for wordpress based sites cost money, in some cases a lot of money (in the $1,000's).   Xanga is only asking for $4 per month to include both a wordpress premium value, plus all the plugins.   If you did your research on pay to blog sites out there, this is more than reasonable.

2 - the best parts of the xanga platform - our community feel.   The ease by which to friend/subscribe and connect with people on Xanga is what Xanga is all about.   Now, the power of a wordpress based platform with what we know works well on the Xanga platform.   WordPress does NOT have a great focus on community, Xanga's platform does.  Now, combine a blogging engine as powerful as WordPress (with an 18% share on the market) with that of what is good about Xanga.

3 - the ability to work closely with TheXangaTeam as a volunteer to keep personal cost down (free blogging) and contribute to a community in a positive way.

Sure we can go to the next 'fad' website - but why?   Our home is here.   Why not make it better where we are at?

We're all talented people, with each of us having a unique skillset that can be brought to the table.

Xanga isn't the tween site many are still declaring it to be.  We are educated, talented, and bright individuals that can make Xanga 2.0 not only happen, but thrive.

    Let's focus on solutions.

Let's do this together - #WeAreXanga  (RT and use this hashtag, spread the word!)

  • Good for you to keep it going, Ed!  I want to restate what I said yesterday in somewhat different terms.  The great intellectual contribution that Harvard Business School gave to the world (in addition to "How to Manage Your Boss") is the 80/20 rule.  Not to be confounded with anyone's 47% or one-percenters, the 80/20 rule basically states that 20% of the people do 80% of the work.  If you have already made a contribution, you are part of the 20%.

But the work of the 20% is not done - there are too many doubters and free riders out there who just aren't going to step up.  So the 20% needs to contribute again.  Not something beyond your means - just give again what you gave before.  We are at about halfway to the goal - so just do it again and we will be there!  I'm doing mine today.

  • @RakkaRay - I love the 80/20 rule (also called the Pareto principle).   I do a lot of analysis based on that rule, and it's extraordinary in it's consistency.   Thanks for the encouragement!

  • I've been thinking the same thing as @RakkaRay - that I'm going to need to donate more. It'll have to wait, though. We might be buying a truck this weekend.

  • @saintvi - Goodness gracious!  Come on, what's more important, ha-ha!

  • this sounds great to me and I think "the fight continues"
